One of the many facets of Satyajit Ray’s multi faceted artistic aptitude is his writing skill. Ray wrote copiously for children. He created characters for children that will remain etched in the memories of those who enjoyed them in their childhood. Although his target audience was children most of the books Ray wrote for children were also enjoyed by adults.
The publishers for Satyajit Ray’s Bengali fictional work were Ananda Publishers from Kolkata. He also published the screen-plays of his Bengali films in the well-read magazine “Ekshan” whose editor was Ray’s dear friend; Nirmalya Acharya. Even after his death, a lot of work; both non-fiction and fiction was published in the western countries. Many of his Bengali short stories were translated into English and published in the west.
Most of the books in the list of Books written by Satyajit Ray were for children. Among these the Feluda stories and the stories of Professor Shanku hold special interest because of the well-loved main characters; Feluda, the sleuth and Professor Shanku, the scientist.
Feluda Stories
Generations of Bengali children enjoyed the Feluda series; 35 stories that had all the exciting elements of a detective solving a mystery and which kept the readers enthralled till the very end. The detective was Feluda a pseudonym of Pradosh Chandra Mitra, a private sleuth who worked in Kolkata. He and his two protégés; Topshe or Tapesh Ranjan Mitra and Lalmohan Babu or Lalmohan Ganguly or  Jatayu solved these mysteries. The Feluda stories were so popular that two of them were made into films in the 1970s. They were Sonar Kella or the Golden Fort and Joi Baba Felunath.
Professor Shanku Stories
The science fiction series with the main character of Professor Shanku whose full name was Trilokeshwar Shanku also caught the imagination of the young minds of at least a couple of generations. Professor Shanku was a genius since birth and became a scientist at an early age. He worked at his diverse inventions and discoveries in his own lab which was at home. The exciting exploits of Professor Shanku, his man-servant Prahlad and cat Newton are the plots of the stories and are set all over the world.
Tarini khuro Stories
The Tarini Khuro stories are also children’s stories as narrated by Tarini Uncle who is an old bachelor. These stories are experiences from the life of Tarini Khuro and recount the sharp-wit of the smart Tarini Khuro in getting out of a situation. Some of these stories are also ghost stories that have an eerie, spooky feel.
